two little fishies…

We were invited to an ‘Under the Sea’ party a couple of weeks ago. The girls and I got a bit over excited about it, especially when I found this on Pinterest. Mindful of the #1year1outfit pledge not to buy any new fabric this year, I raided the dressing-up box for sparkly things we could chop up. We had an oversized blue sparkly synthetic top (that had an amazing static effect) and some lengths of sparkle fabric leftover from Rose’s disco party last year. These, along with some silver fabric scraps in my stash, gave the girls and I plenty of material for cutting out scales – we drew round a saucer with a felt tip and the girls carefully cut circles out. Then I just needed something slippery for the underside of the fish tails – I looked woefully at some blue taffeta in my fabric cupboard that had my name on it – it was perfect: slippery, shiny in an aquamarine blue …but far too good for dressing up. I did an about turn, congratulated myself for retaining the lining of a woman’s skirt that has since become a dress for Dilly, and patched bits of it together to make two large fishtail shapes – dark blue now, but beautifully slippery. As is the way with patching things together, it all took rather longer than anticipated, so the ties were just a simple length of turquoise webbing. I had planned to make some sort of mermaidy padded ‘shell-bra’… or just appliqué some shells onto the leotards in the appropriate place a la Lauralovespugs… but already I’d put my hours in on this project. Fortunately the girls already had a pair of mummy-made turquoise leggings each and the tails on their own were a hit. Dilly was a bit disappointed that the party was not, in fact, ‘underwater’ as billed – but it didn’t stop those fishies swimming…
